Parasites & Herbal Worming Recipe
Parasites will not live in a healthy digestive system/immune system.
What affects your horse's digestive system and immune system? Everything you put into his/her mouth, including feed especalily feeds high in sugar & starch, GMO feeds, over use of chemical wormer's and medication (and stress).
I wrote an article for Ireland's horse and pony magizine with my friend Christophe Mouze http://macallafarm.ie and we talked about a small worm burden not causing problems (200 eggs per gram or less) this can even stimulate the immune system to encourage resistance to heavier burdens, never under- estimate the power of the immune system, but of course the immune sytem needs to be healthy.
Worms are now becoming totally resistant to chemicals, and there are no new chemicals being developed, what is happening now is double dose's of chemical wormer's are being administered and daily de-worming is being reccommed with horrific consequences.
So what do you do?
Number 1. Good parture mangement is key- collecting manuare daily, this will help break the life cycle of the parasites.
Number 2. Fecal egg counts every 3 months; Fecal counts will help give you an idea what is happening in your horse's body. why would you de-worm your horse when you do not even know if your horse has a large worm burden or not?
Number 3. Mixed grazing with other animals, also reduce the number of horses per acre.
This is the most basic, simple homemade herbal wormer that is used in a holstic manner.
Recipe for herbal worming:
- 600 g fresh organic garlic
- 1.5 litre organic cold pressed olive oil
- 250 g dried wormwood
- 400g soaked pumpkin seed soaked for 12 hours in cold water.
- This recipe makes enough for 3 horses.
- *New addations to this recipe include 150g of ground fennel seed and 100g ground cloves
Step by step
Weigh out pumpkin seeds 400g. (pumpkin seeds are super for tape worm)
Soak for 12 hours in cold water & then strain.
Weigh out the garlic 600g and break up into small cloves, you do not have to over peel, you can just take off some of the skin.
Place half the oil into the blender first, and then add the garlic & blend untill the garlic & oil has formed a paste (10-15 seconds).empty this out into a bucket or large container.
Next add the rest of the oil into the blender and then add the pumkin seeds, and blend up untill a paste is formed, add this to the garlic and oil mix in the bucket.
Blend up pumpkin seeds, add to garlic oil mix in bucket.
Weigh out dried wormwood and other dried herbs.
Add the wormwood and other dreid herbs into the garlic oil & pumpkin oil mix and combine all of it together,if its to wet add some more wormwood, if its to dry add more oil.
Roll the mixture into balls that roughly weigh 50g each, these can be feed straight to the horse or mixed into their feed.
One ball should be feed for 5- 6 days for each horse, this will depend on your fecal count results. For horses with high counts feed one ball for up to 10 days.
Do not use on pregant mares.
Chemical wormers
if you feel you still need to use chemical de-wormers
Number 1. probiotic one week before worming and for 2 weeks after.
Number 2. Understand what type of wormer you are using and why. Take no chances with the instrustions, accurately weigh your horse using a weigh tape.
Number 3. Worm each horse as an individual.
